Course Overview

This course offers a detailed exploration of ultrasound as an essential tool in diagnosing and managing arthritis, focusing on early detection of synovitis, joint effusion, and cartilage/bone erosions. It covers the EULAR-OMERACT ultrasound grading system for assessing arthritis severity, with a focus on the hand joints. Learn how ultrasound surpasses traditional methods in sensitivity and resolution, allowing for earlier diagnosis and intervention. This course includes step-by-step guidance on performing ultrasound exams, analyzing results, and differentiating types of inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and CPPD. Ideal for clinicians aiming to enhance their diagnostic capabilities in arthritis care.

Course Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will:

  • Define and identify the normal sonoanatomy of joints

  • Identify sonopathology in terms of synovitis and power doppler signal and grade using the EULER-OMERACT consensus guidelines

  • Identify erosions, intraarticular calcium, and effusions.

  • Perform a standardized EULER-OMERACT arthritis study of the hand.

Target Audience

  • Physicians, sonographers, and others who perform and/or interpret ultrasound.
