Course Overview

This course provides a detailed understanding of the sonographic detection of severe skeletal dysplasias, focusing on the critical role of early diagnosis in managing pregnancies and genetic counseling. Learn how to identify key markers such as femur length, body proportionality, and other skeletal anomalies to diagnose conditions like achondroplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta, and thanatophoric dysplasia.

Course Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will:

  • Be able to explain why measurement of the femur length often provides the first clue that bone formation is abnormal

  • Discuss how comparison of femur length with other growing body parts can help confirm skeletal dysplasia

  • Know how to summarize the remainder of the extended anatomical survey to predict lethality

  • Describe specific skeletal dysplasias

Target Audience

  • Physicians, sonographers, and others who perform and/or interpret obstetrical ultrasound.

* AMA PRA Category 1 ™ credits are used by physicians and other groups like PAs and certain nurses. Category 1 credits are accepted by the ARDMS, CCI, ACCME, and Sonography Canada.
