Sonographic Evaluation of Ectopic Pregnancies

Sonographic Evaluation of Ectopic Pregnancies

Course Overview

This course covers the sonographic evaluation of ectopic pregnancies, focusing on early detection, risk factors, and imaging features. Learn how transvaginal ultrasound and quantitative B-hCG levels are essential for diagnosing ectopic pregnancies, including the identification of classic sonographic findings like the "echogenic ring" and "ring of fire." The course also explores various ectopic pregnancy locations (ampullary, isthmic, cornual, ovarian, and cervical) and their distinctive ultrasound characteristics. Additionally, the course discusses advanced diagnostic techniques using color Doppler, management strategies, and treatment options, including surgical and medical approaches like methotrexate therapy.

Course Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant will:

  • Identify the risk factors associated with an ectopic gestation.

  • Summarize the medical and surgical management of ectopic pregnancies.

  • Correlate the B-hCG levels with gestational age and ultrasound findings.

  • Improve sensitivity and specificity in identifying ectopic pregnancy.
