This program is designed to provide radiologists and other breast and women's imaging health care professionals with advances in the detection, diagnosis, management and treatment of breast cancer and benign breast abnormalities. Our focus will be on the impact of new technological advances and interventional procedures. The SAWI course will focus on all areas of women's imaging.

Educational Goals

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Correlate MRI, mammography and ultrasound findings
  • Assess benign and malignant breast lesions using the ACR BI-RADS® for mammography, US and MRI
  • Integrate breast MRI into their practices
  • Recognize indications for and selection of appropriate percutaneous image-guided breast interventional procedures
  • Utilize devices for MRI-guided and other image-guided procedures
  • Explain the role of automated breast ultrasound
  • Establish concordance of histopathology with imaging findings
  • Describe the management of high-risk breast lesions and how imaging influences selection of surgical procedures
  • Apply basic physics to the various breast imaging modalities
  • Recognize radiation doses of common X-ray examinations including mammography, PET, nuclear medicine, and high-resolution CT scans
  • Optimize new applications of digital mammography, CAD, US, MRI, Sestamibi and PET
  • Describe efficient workflow for digital mammography
  • Review connectivity issues involving PACS and other archiving systems
  • Identify the role of CAD in breast imaging modalities - mammography, US and MRI
  • Describe the role of imaging in the diagnosis and screening of ovarian cancer
  • Recognize US and MR findings in benign and malignant pelvic abnormalities in women
  • Identify osteoporosis, its causes and treatments
  • Understand the mechanics of tomosynthesis and how this modality can resolve the superimposition of tissue of FFDM
  • Describe the reasons that tomosynthesis can reduce false positive mammography interpretations
  • Describe the various methods by which supplemental whole breast screening ultrasound can be performed
  • Understand imaging triage and work up of infertility, and complications of pregnancy
